A passion for Jesus: Why should I bother spending time with God?

Why should we have a passion for Jesus? I feel that sometimes we look down upon those who exert a lot of passion and effort in working for the Lord. Why do we do that? Shouldn’t we all be passionate for Jesus?! Here are 6 points why we should be passionate about Jesus.

We exist because of God.

According to St Thomas Aquinas God is “Ipsum Esse Subsistens” which means that God is the sheer act of ‘to be’ itself. God is not a part of the universe nor is He a literal man in the heavens. God is much more than that. God is being, God is existence, God is reality and God just simply is ‘to be’. I urge you to pause for a second and ponder this. Isn’t this just mind-blowing? God is everything! God is truly everything! The triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), who we claim as our own, the true God, is the reason why there is something rather than nothing.

When comprehending who God is, I am lost for words.

Now, this God thought about us. We are only here, in this created world, because He wanted us here. God didn’t have to think about us since we didn’t need be here. Therefore, shouldn’t we be giving Him thanks and glory unceasingly? Is He someone that should be ignored?

“Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed. Each of us is loved. Each of us is necessary.” -Pope Benedict XVI

I am too scared to get close to Jesus!…

Many people refrain from forming a close relationship with Jesus because of a fear of trials and sorrows. After all Jesus did say “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16: 24).

Absolutely!! Becoming an ardent follower of Christ does not mean that all your problems will vanish. If there is anyone that proclaims a christianity devoid of suffering then that is not true christianity. Your life and circumstances do not change when following Christ but you do. Yes, God permits sufferings to those who follow Him but this is not an abandonment. It is precisely at these moments that God is ever close. As I’ve mentioned previously, God is Father and there are times when our father appears to remove His hands from us because He knows something greater. I can say this proudly because there have been times when God ruined my plans because He knew that wasn’t where I should be.

A fear of trials should not deter us from becoming close to Jesus who more than anyone wishes the good for us. Suffering is a part of life but how much more beautiful is it when the all knowing God is by your side, fighting for you!

“If we only knew the precious treasure hidden in infirmities, we would receive them with the same joy with which we receive the greatest benefits, and we would bear them without ever complaining or showing signs of weariness." -St Vincent de Paul

He loved us to the Cross.

Love is perhaps THE REASON why we should be passionate about Jesus. Jesus Christ the son of God and God Himself loved us soo much ,and saw how the sin of our forefathers separated us from the love of God, that He became man, suffered and died the most cruel and painful death.

God took upon everything for us so that we could once again come to know Him like Adam and Eve did. Why? It is just that Love!

If Jesus loved us this much then I think He deserves more attention than our social media, our friends, our family and society because He gave up His friends, His family and His life for us.

Who are we in the sight of this world? No one in particular. Just another man or woman passing by. But for Jesus we are not just somebody, We are everything!

Friends, the love of people in this world is limited because they aren’t perfect. The love of Christ alone is PERFECT. It is a shame to avoid this love and pursue finite forms of love, as amazing as they may seem at any given moment.

Your are loved more than you will ever know by someone who died to know you. Romans 5:8

He doesn’t need our attention BUT…

So Ok yeah Jesus loves us, created us and died for us. So what? Does this necessarily mean that I need to give Him my attention 24/7? The answer is …YES!!

I mean if someone did this all for you then He deserves some respect. God doesn’t need our attention. He doesn’t crave our presence. God lacks nothing because if He did then He wouldn’t be God. The Father, Son and Holy spirit are perfectly happy in themselves!

But imagine a father who did everything for his children but was ignored, even though he only asked to be with his children for an hour a week. How deeply hurt would this father be? Imagine if you were this father or maybe even the mother. You would be devastated, right?

This hurt is certainly there in Gods’ heart since He fathered this creation. Therefore, the greatest injustice we commit time and time again is the ignorance of our Father in Heaven.

“God loves us more than a father, mother, friend, or any else could love, and even more than we are able to love ourselves” – St. John Chrysostom

Nothing will satisfy our longings than God.

I have heard people remark that they don’t really have a desire for God. They know He exists but it's not a relationship that they feel the need to foster. There are so many other things that fit their interests.

Is God someone who needs to fit our preferences? Isn’t He more than that?

How can we say “ Oh I don’t feel a connection to Jesus so I don’t need this relationship” when Jesus didn’t think about how He felt whilst on the via Crucis (way of the cross). Jesus despite His un-comfortability loved each and every one us even though He had not ,in His human life, ever met any of us.

The six things in life that never get boring are knowing and loving God, your neighbour, and yourself. - Peter Kreeft

We lose nothing when we are with God.

A lot of people refrain from becoming close to Jesus or abandon their relationship with Jesus because of a feeling that they are missing out things that their friends are doing or are fun. This conflict often leads individuals to decide that maybe their excitement for Jesus could be toned down a bit.

I know exactly how this feels. Ask any individual who is a faithful catholic. I assure you they have felt the same thing. Such experiences are inevitable but let’s not fall into this trap.

Jesus supersedes every enjoyment in our lives. As long as what entices us isn’t disruptive to our soul , then there no need for us to be afraid that getting close to Jesus will prevent us from joyful situations. Jesus wants to be part of our happy times and our hard times. Being close with Jesus will only fortify those happy moments because in the moments we will find deeper meaning thus deep satisfaction. So, never be afraid and stick with Jesus because we lose NOTHING, when we are with Him. We only GAIN more happiness when we are with Jesus.

I conclude now by saying one last thing. We must not hesitate or be embarrassed to ardently follow Christ since there is nothing better that we could do with our lives. This is the most crucial part of our being. We cannot live our life fully unless we live it entirely, in our own unique callings, for Christ. Let’s make this our mission in life - to live and die for our God!

"You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending."

C.S. Lewis

God bless xx
